Drinking water is flowing straight from the tap in Elmhurst for the first time from the new state-of-the-art treatment plant.
Elmhurst residents no longer need to rely on rainwater tanks or bottled water for drinking and cooking, thanks to Grampians Wimmera Mallee (GWM) Water’s $3 million project to provide drinking water to the small Pyrenees town.
The water is flowing straight from the new Elmhurst Water Treatment Plant - GWMWater’s first completely off-grid water treatment facility.
The award-winning treatment plant features an 85-kilowatt solar array and a 108kWh battery, which provides enough renewable energy to keep the town hydrated, and a back-up generator if needed.
By not connecting to the electricity grid, impacts on neighbouring properties and native vegetation during construction were reduced.
It also provides for a more reliable cost-effective water supply for customers, ensuring drinking water is on tap without putting pressure on customers’ bills.
Elmhurst’s drinking water is sourced from the local catchment and treated in line with Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
GWMWater has also recently upgraded Ultima’s water supply to provide high-quality treated drinking water and is planning upgrades to water supply in Moyston, Kaniva, Berriwillock and Culgoa.
