New technical guidelines have been developed to support the management and protection of Victoria’s precious waterways.

These guidelines provide expert guidance to help waterway managers look after and improve the health of our waterways.

They offer information for managing waterway processes and physical form, including some habitat interventions, to support decision-making.

They help managers decide whether they need to undertake works or not and ensure that any changes we make to waterways have the desired positive impact.

Anyone involved in the management of rivers, creeks and streams including the riparian vegetation that grows along the edges of these waterways, may find these guidelines useful.

What do the new guidelines include?

  • Contemporary approaches for managing waterway dynamics and physical form, emphasising the use of native vegetation in all on-ground interventions.
  • Equip practitioners with the tools to assess whether interventions are needed, offering a range of intervention options and detailed specifications.
  • Serve as a vital knowledge-sharing resource, especially for those new to the field.
  • Help prevent costly mistakes and unintended consequences from poorly executed interventions.
