The third ISC report provides a snapshot of river health for 29,000 km of major rivers and streams in Victoria, using data collected over a 6-year period from 2004 to 2010.
For the first time, remote sensing technology was used to provide a more accurate and comprehensive assessment of river conditions than ever before.
Across Victoria, it was found that 23% of river length assessed was in either good or excellent condition. The report indicates that there has been no substantial change in state-wide river conditions since the 2004 report.
This is a positive result when considering the data for this assessment was collected over a 6-year period that coincided with a severe drought and several extensive bushfires.
