Dam safety regulation

The Minister for Water has powers under the Water Act 1989 to regulate the construction, operation and safety of dams in Victoria.

These powers apply to:

  • dams owned or managed by public entities such as:
    • water corporations
    • local government authorities
    • Parks Victoria
    • Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action
  • private dams used for a range of purposes including, commercial, agricultural, irrigation and hydro power generation.

The Strategic Framework for Dam Safety Regulation sets out Victoria’s regulatory policies and practices.

Dam Safety Expert Advisory Panel

The Dam Safety Expert Advisory Panel (formerly known as the Dam Safety Advisory Committee) provides specialist advice to DEECA on the regulation of dam safety.

The panel members have been appointed based on their expertise in dam safety, asset and risk management, community relations and communications, economics/business management and water industry experience.
